Summary

The Australia-Chile Free Trade Agreement (ACI-FTA), which entered into force on March 6, 2009, contains 23 chapters covering goods, services and investment, 3 annexes, and 4 side letters. As of January 1, 2015, all tariffs on current trade in goods have been eliminated.

Key paperless trade provisions are found in:

Chapter 5 (Customs Administration):

  • Adoption of paperless trading methods endorsed by the World Customs Organization
  • Transition to electronic means for all Customs reporting requirements
  • Implementation of automated customs procedures

Chapter 16 (Electronic Commerce):

  • Recognition of electronic versions of trade administration documents as legally equivalent to paper documents
  • Electronic authentication standards
  • Digital documentation protocols
  • Cross-border electronic information exchange

The agreement demonstrates both countries' commitment to modernizing trade procedures through digital solutions while maintaining security and compliance standards. It provides a comprehensive framework for implementing paperless trade practices between Australia and Chile.
